Paul Cézanne. 1839 - 1906 Born January 19th 1839 at Aix - en - Provence. His early paintings were influenced by the artist Eugene Delacroix and in his oil painting he tended to use black which made his paintings seem dark. Other artists to influence Cézanne were Courbet, Daumier and Manet. It was in the 1870's when he began to show his Impressionistic abilities and spent some time living with the renown collector and amateur artist Dr. Gachet. His interest in still life became more prominent as self criticism of his work meant that he would paint extremely slowly as he progressed as an Impressionist. His palette now was much lighter in tone without the use of black in his colours as in the early years of his career, Due to his paintings being criticized in the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877 he decided to return home in Aix - en - Provence, and began to develop an interest in 'plein air' painting and in the area around his home he found many subjects to paint. His work is now much acclaimed by collectors, as his talents as one of the leading impressionist is appreciated by the art establishment.
Died October 22nd 1906 at Aix - en - Provence.
