| | Douglas Carpenter: Artist demonstrator
On the net painting demonstration Demonstrator to art clubs & societies. A full demonstration on my own developments in painting, covering methods of colour mixing. Ways and means of applying paint with brushes and pallet
knifes, fingers.
| The Panel: Plywood panels with artex painted on, then stippled with a paint brush, sand off rough bits leaving a good texture for paint, then prime with acrylic pink/reddybrown colour to add warmth to under painting (see bottom of demo panel). I use panels up to 12" x 16" then I prefer canvas because of weight. | Under painting: Stag two: lower of the 2 drafts panels are just cerulean blue and burnt umber, this establishes the paintings form, gives an idea of balance and proportion, i.e. horizon line not in center of painting like in top draft! | | The Finish From the under painting its a matter of building up the colours, usually from dark to light, sometimes wet in wet, or one may have to wait for the paint to dry then apply details with finer brushes. Finally a couple of coats of vanish to bring out the colours and protect the surface | |
| | Finished painting 7" x 5" by Douglas Carpenter | | | Go to sketch book | Techniques with brushes and knives |
 | Paint brushes and palette knives in use | | Top two are Keith Fenwick's specials, these brushes are great for trees and foliage. Red handle brush, my water colour mixing brush and good for grass flicks as well as thatch roof texture. | | Flat brush (between to fine detail brushes) is synthetic hair-good with acrylic paint. The lower fine brush is called a rigger. Two white handles are normal hog hair, one round the other flat. | | Blue handle another kind of synthetic Cotman 666 excellent for bricks and the like, The brush below that, is top of the range No 12 Kolinsky sable, very expensive, wonderful with big watercolour washes especially the sky. | | No: 000 kolinsky (part worn) for ultra fine details. Two more flat brushes (light handle) is synthetic- the other hog hair, both good general work horses. | | Palette Knives:- smallest one for tree leaves - one by one in impasto, middle knife for general character; on paths, tree trunks plus highlight in clouds. Larger is good paint mixer. | | These are by no means the full range of brushes available or indeed that I use, but a fair selection, more than adequate to paint most pictures. | | Colours I prefer in painting | Cadmium yellow | Cadmium red | Burnt sienna | Ultramarine blue | Sap green | | | Raw sienna | Alizarin red | Burnt umber | Cerulean blue | Payne's gray | Plus: Titanium White |
These pictures: 5 stages to a finished oil painting from a demonstration in March 99, 16" x 24" on canvas
