Mary Stevenson Cassatt, 1844 - 1926..
Mary Cassatt was born in 1844 and studied
art at the Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia, U.S.A. After traveling all
over Europe she then settled in Paris in 1874 and became close to the
artist Degas. His influence on her work led her into the French Impressionist
movement and she exhibited some of her work in the Impressionist
exhibitions of 1879 - 1886. Her knowledge of the Impressionists prompted her
brother Alexander to buy paintings by Renoir, Manet, Monet, Pissarro and Degas.
In the 1890's in Paris she became influenced by an exhibition of Japanese prints
and her work improved in clarity and color. Her involvement in printing
began to expand and throughout her career became well known in this field of
art. She made France her home for the rest of her life and is known as being a
prolific painter in pastels and water-colors. Mary Cassatt was a master painter
and much admired by other women artists.
She died 1926.

Paul Cézanne. 1839 - 1906
Born January 19th 1839 at Aix - en -
Provence. His early paintings were influenced by the artist Eugene Delacroix and
in his oil painting he tended to use black which made his paintings seem dark.
Other artists to influence Cézanne were Courbet, Daumier and Manet. It was in
the 1870's when he began to show his Impressionistic abilities and spent some
time living with the renown collector and amateur artist Dr. Gachet. His
interest in still life became more prominent as self criticism of his work meant
that he would paint extremely slowly as he progressed as an Impressionist. His
palette now was much lighter in tone without the use of black in his colours as
in the early years of his career, Due to his paintings being criticized in the
third Impressionist exhibition in 1877 he decided to return home in Aix - en -
Provence, and began to develop an interest in 'plein air' painting
and in the area around his home he found many subjects to paint. His work is now
much acclaimed by
collectors, as his talents as one of the leading impressionist is appreciated by
the art establishment.

Salvador Dali. 1904 - 1989 H. S.
A. A.
One of the greatest painters of the 20th Century
Studied as a young man at the San Fernando
Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, and he had his first exhibition of his
paintings in Barcelona in 1925. At the age of 25 he became a member of the
group of surrealists and also met his future wife Gala and they became very
close. His prominence in the surrealists movement led his to become it's most
influential painter but was expelled from the group in 1934. Dali left Europe in
1940 to go to America and it was in 1941 that the Museum of Modern Art,
New York gave him a major exhibition of his work which set him on the path to
fame. He started a new series of 19 large paintings in a new style which dwelt
on religion and historical scenes. Following the death of his wife Gala in 1982
Dali himself began to have poor health with heart problems Throughout his
life he worked in all types of mediums and after he died on January 23rd 1989
his family found thousands of paintings in his studio. He will be remembered as
being one of the great artist's of the 20th century.

Edgar Degas. 1834 - 1917..
Born in Paris on the 19th July 1834.
Studied art under the painter Lamothes and at 18
began his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris. Soon however he was
tempted to move to Italy where he studied the Renaissance movement and
paintings. After five years in Italy he returned to Paris and started to paint
the portraits of his own family and close friends. His involvement with the
artist Manet led him into painting theatrical backdrops.
It was around 1869 that his interest in the
ballet dancer began and this interest in the female ballet dancer remained one
of his favorite subjects to paint for the rest of his life. Other favorite subjects were the racecourses and racehorses and cafe scenes in Paris. His use
of the pastels medium was arrived at by his early study of the paintings of
Ingres, and Degas found the medium to his liking when sketching the
movement and form of the ballet dancer. Degas was a great painter of the female
form and was well liked throughout the art establishment. He died on September
27th 1917, Paris leaving thousands of drawings and sketches in his preferred
medium of pastels.

Vincent Van Gogh, Dutch. 1853 - 1890
Born in 1853 son of Theodorus Van Gogh and Anna
Carbentus in Groot - Zundern, Holland. He had a brother called Theo. born 1st
May 1857. By 1869 he became apprenticed to art dealers Goupil & Cie, Paris.
In 1873 Vincent was transferred to London where he visited the museums and
art galleries to increase his knowledge of the Victorian painters. His
interest in the bible then took preference over his art and by 1877 he
returned to Amsterdam and his religious studies. He was sent to a mining village
in Belgium to preach but lived in extreme poverty and by 1880 his interest in
religion had declined mainly through personal failure and he took up painting
full time again. His brother Theo. had become very close during his adult life
and they corresponded by letter on a regular basis with Theo. sending Vincent
the art materials he constantly requested.
His poverty continued, and it was only his
brother Theo's belief that one day Vincent's paintings would be
appreciated by the art establishment that sustained their close and personal
friendship. It was the year 1888, Vincent's painting began to show some
improvement and he journeyed to Arles in Provence to paint landscapes. He
rented a house which became known as the "Yellow House of the artist"
and now he started to find himself, and with a new style of painting began
a new and productive era. Over the summer months he created numerous paintings
of the countryside and he began to think about starting a school of painting and
a new artist community. Paul Gauguin joined him at Arles in the October but over
the following months due to their constant arguments the relationship
deteriorated. After the failed attack on Gauguin with a razor, Vincent started
to lose his mind and cuts off his left earlobe. Vincent continues to work again
after being cared for but his mental state was now fragile and breakdowns
followed at regular intervals and he was transferred to a mental asylum.
By the January of 1890 still suffering
from mental breakdowns he continued to paint when he could. In this last year of
his life, the art critics had started to appreciate his paintings but through
his continued mental illness and financial hardship, on the 27th July Vincent
shot himself in the chest with a pistol he had borrowed and he died on the
29th July 1890.

L. S. Lowry, R. A., British Industrial
Landscape painter. 1887 - 1976 H. S. A. A.
Born on the 1st November 1887 in Stretford,
Manchester. Lancashire. U. K.
It would be in early 1909 when his family
moved to Station Road, Pendlebury, where he lived for around 40 years. He
studied at Salford School of Art part time in the period 1915-28 and during the
evenings he worked as a rent collector in the Manchester and Salford
area. He would draw in a small pocket size sketchbook in pencil., the
local people, life and grimy buildings during his working visits into the
streets and houses. After working all day at the Salford School of Art and in
the evenings collecting the rents he would go into his studio and paint during
the night and into the early hours, where he created in oil paints the
industrial paintings depicting the streets and mills of Lancashire.
During the 1930's and exhibitions in
Manchester and Salford, it was in 1939 when he was offered an exhibition
at the Lefevre Gallery , London. Following the London exhibition , interest in
his paintings really began and L. S. Lowry had finally arrived on to the
art scene. Being a very cautious man regarding money it wasn't until 1952
when sales of his paintings were in steady demand that he decided one evening to
give up his part time insurance and rent collector job. Well known for the
stylized stick like figures of workers of the industrial cotton mills of
Lancashire and received the honor of R. A. for his life's work in art. Lowry
was always to be seen in his beloved Salford and Manchester, sketching the grimy
streets full of children and people about their work in his personalized
unique way. Late in his career he specialized in depicting the solitary lonely
misfit of society, but it's mainly through his paintings of the working
people of Salford and Manchester at the street level of the 1930's depression
to the 1960's that he will be remembered for. He became an active president of
the Bury Art Society and was well known by it's painter members.
On one of Theo's visit to Lowry's studio,
he commented on the huge amounts of Flake White oil paint that Lowry used in his
paintings to which he replied, "I buy huge quantities of white, but I only
use Flake White oil paint as I have found that over a few years it tends to
mellow quickly with age and this is part of the atmospheric light effect I want
in my paintings. " It appears that Lowry had experimented with various
colours and painted a number of small panels with colour, including Flake White
and then placed the panels in a box which he put away for a few years. When he
opened the box later he found to his satisfaction that the Flake White oil paint
had mellowed as he intended to a greyish and yellow appearance which was
the desired effect he wanted in his paintings.
A new gallery the Lowry Center, has been
constructed at Salford Keys, and is now open to the public.
A magnificent exhibition of 100 of the artists
paintings will be on show at one time at the Lowry and the public will be able
to enjoy the works in this newly built exhibition centre, built specially to
house the Lowry collection and to honour Salford's greatest artist of the 20th
century.
During his life he became associated in
Manchester and Salford area with the painter and long time friend, Theodore
Zimmerman who also lived in the Manchester area.
L. S. Lowry died age 89 on the 23rd February
1976. Represented in many public and private collections.

Henri Matisse. 1869 - 1954 H. S. A. A.
Born 1869 French Fauvism painter. He became a
student of the painter Odilon Redon and during this time his studies in art led
him to the work of Cezanne and Manet. In 1905 he moved to the south of France
and Joined the artist Andre Derain at Collioure. The influence of Derain changed
his palette which now had become much more colourful. The colours on the coast
around Collioure inspired him and his paintings began to show a new style,
full of colour and movement.
During the 1914 - 1918 war he traveled to North
Africa and during this time a move into 'abstract forms' began by 1916. In 1917
he returned to the Cote d'Azur area in the south of France where he
painted many pictures in his new style.
Matisse died in 1954 leaving a great quantity of

Claude Monet. 1840 - 1926
Born in Paris in 1840 he is now regarded
as one of the greatest artist's of the 19th and 20th century. The Impressionists
naturally depicted the seasons and weather of Spring, Summer and Winter,
painting in the open air outdoors, they became masters of light and
atmospheric effects. He was fascinated with snow scenes and was the first
Impressionist to paint the snow "En plein air" and many of the snow
pictures were painted in the area around Argenteuil and on the Seine. His love
of London especially in winter when fog appears over the river Thames prompted
many river paintings. Like Waterloo Bridge, with it's blues and greys and the
Houses of Parliament almost reminiscent in appearance to the 'Nocturnes' of
Whistler. Monet's most important project was the creation of his
water garden at his home in Giverny, France. The beautiful garden which is still
filled with many types of colourful flowers of nature and the water garden
remains a most popular place to visit. His water lilies series of mural
paintings which were painted on huge canvasses are greatly loved for their
majestic simplicity and colour. He died at the age of 86.
His works are represented in many public and

Pablo Picasso, Spanish. 1881 - 1973 H.
S. A. A.
Born on October 25th 1881 in Malaga, Spain to
Maria Picasso, wife of the artist Jose Ruiz. He decided to take his mothers
surname as an artist and qualified for the Academy of Fine Arts, Barcelona.
Later he studied at the San Fernando Academy, Madrid. His well known 'Blue
period' spanned the years between 1901 to 1904 when he was painting in
Paris. Next came the 'circus' period with it's acrobats and clowns with a
complete change of palette. The cubist period after meeting Braque started
around 1911 and continued for a few years before entering a time where he
designed sets for the theatre in a more classical style. A move into other forms
of art including sculpture in wrought iron and other materials started in the
early 1920's and continued until the 1930's. During the 2nd world war Picasso
remained in Paris and during this time he painted many pictures which dwelt on
the theme of death. He met and lived with Fran. Gilot and she gave him two
children. The children Claude and Paloma appeared in a number of his paintings
in the 40's. He created many forms of ceramic art during the late 1940's.
and it was into the 1950's when his main interest turned to printing and
lithography.
In 1953 he met Jacqueline Roque and in 1961 he
married her and following this marriage, Pablo and Jaqueline decided to
leave Paris and moved to the south of France His popularity as an
artist earned him the nickname 'The showman', with now exhibitions in Europe and
America and in the 1960's he created the huge sculpture at the Chicago Civic
Centre. An exhibition of his works at the Louvre in 1971 in honour for his 90th
birthday was a great success followed in 1980 by an exhibition of his life works
at the Museum of Modern Arts, New York..
Following a very active and prolific painting

Camille Pissarro. 1830 - 1903
Born 1830 on the Caribbean island of St.
Thomas and at a young age moved to Paris to study painting. He later returned to
St. Thomas to run the family business but his heart and future was as a painter.
Driven by his passion for painting he returned to Paris in 1855 and during this
time met Corot and Manet. In 1860 he became friends with Cézanne and other
Impressionists and exhibited a painting at the 'Salon des Refuses'. The small
group of Impressionists being short of a place to show their works exhibited at
the photographic studio of Nadar and the exhibition proved a success. Pissarro
giving advice to young painters said, "Look for the type of scene in nature
that suits your temperament and then the motif should be observed for its
shape and colour rather than for its drawing. Try and keep your painting
loose in form, as precise drawing is dry and hampers the impression of the whole
and destroys all the sensations. Do not define to closely the outlines of
things as it is the brush stroke of the right value and colour which should
produce the drawing. Looked as a mass the greatest difficulty is not to give the
contour in detail but to paint what is within. Always paint the essential
character of things and try to convey it by any means whatsoever without
bothering about technique. When you are painting, make a choice of subject and
see what is on the right and the left, then work on everything simultaneously.
Don't work bit by bit, but paint everything at once by placing the tones
everywhere with brush strokes of the right colour
and value, while taking notice of what is
alongside as this may affect the reflective colour and value. Use small
brush strokes and try to put down your perceptions immediately. Your eyes you
should not be fixed by one point, but should take in everything while you are
observing the reflections which the other colours produce on their surroundings.
Work at the same time upon sky, water, branches and ground, keeping everything
going on an equal basis and unceasingly rework until you have the effect.
Cover the canvas with paint at the first go and then work at it until you
can see nothing foliage and other things. Don't be afraid of putting on colour
and then refine the work little by little. Don't proceed according to
rules and principles, but paint what you observe and feel. Paint generously and
unhesitatingly, for it is best not to lose your first impression. Never be
timid in front of nature as one must be bold at the risk of being deceived
into making mistakes. The artist must have only one master and it is
nature as she is the one always to be consulted."
Pissarro became one of the first great artists
of the 19th / 20th century to use pastels as a painting medium in it's own right
and his pastels have a strength of colour equal to any other medium. Following a
long and successful career painting in
Pastels, Oils and Water-color in 1930, Paris he

Jackson Pollock, Contemporary American Artist. 1912 -
1956 H. S. A. A.
Born 1912 in Cody, Wyoming, America, and became
known as the most important artist of the Abstract Expressionist movement. His
main studies in art at the age of 17 years old was under the painter
Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Student's League, New York. And in the early
1930's was influenced by the Mexican Muralist painters Orozco and Rivera.
It was in the late 1940's that his painting
started to show the direction in art known as abstract and the 'drip and splash'
style which he would become known throughout the world. He would place
huge canvases on the floor and then 'drip and splash colours through
holes in a paint can suspended above the canvas. His use of knives, sticks and
other various items to manipulate and blend the paint together with adding other
material such as pieces of broken glass, sand, plaster and any other material to
hand to create an 'impasto' of various thickness to achieve the effect he
wanted. This type of method became known as 'action' painting, thereby resulting
in direct expressionism of the moods of the artist.
Later in his life he would alter the actual
shape of the canvas to one of unusual characteristics later known as the
New American Painting style.
Theodore Zimmerman's family retain four drawings
of Pollock in their collection.
Jackson Pollock died in an automobile crash in
Cody in 1956 only 44 years old but was a giant figure of American
Abstract Expressionism.

Pierre Auguste Renoir. 1841 - 1919
Born 1841 the son of a tailor in Limoges,
France. When he was only 4 years old his family decided to move to Paris. When
Pierre became 13 he was apprenticed to a painter in a factory which made and
decorated china-ware. Here he was trained to paint in the 18th century style. To
earn extra money he sold copies of 18th century paintings which he copied
in the Louvre, Paris and also attended classes in the evenings to try to improve
his painting technique. When he was 21 he joined the studio of Gleyre
where he became aquatinted with other artists and became friends with Claude
Monet and Alfred Sisley. His painting was interrupted by the onset of the war
between France and Prussia and during this time only a few paintings were
completed. After the was over, his paintings began to become much richer in
colour, mainly due to his friendship and involvement with the Impressionists.
The majority of the Impressionists were involved with painting nature and
landscapes, but Renoir chose to include figures and people in his pictures and
his style began to progress and develop as he began to include children as the
main subject with a garden or landscape background. The children in his
paintings appear to be aware of their importance within the picture and his
skill of portraying the young child in a floral background proved very popular
with his clients.
He painted right up to the day he died even
though he had extreme difficulty holding his brushes due to a long and painful
illness. He became one of the most important of the French Impressionists and
his paintings are enjoyed by many art lovers throughout the world.

Born in Paris on the 30th October 1839.
Sisley's father was an English merchant trader
who wanted his son to enter the business when he left school. However, his
interest in Impressionism started to influence his style of painting and he
joined the main group of Impressionists working in Paris at the time. Paintings
of landscapes around Paris were completed at Argenteuil, Bougival and
Louveciennes with the sky being the major part of the painting. Due
recognition of his talents as a painter was rather late in arriving and now
is fully accepted as on of the major Impressionists of the 19th century. He died
of throat and mouth cancer on January 29th 1899 at Moret-sur-Loing.
